This spring has been spectacular for the redbuds in Kentucky. The distinctive magenta color of the early blooms brings a beautiful splash of contrast to the many hues of green emerging along the roadways. Redbuds are easy to spot… as I said above, they are magenta.
I have no idea why they aren’t called magentabuds, or pinkbuds or even purplebuds. I spent a good two minutes searching the web and could not find a GOOD answer, so I suspect there isn’t one.
Anyway, our friends at Cedar Creek Vineyards produce a variety of red wine named for the redbud trees that illuminate Southern and Eastern Kentucky each spring. Kirby designed the label for this wine, as well as the Cedar Creek logo and website (note—archive version).
Bella Notte Restaurant in Lexington selected Redbud Red as their Featured Kentucky Wine in March. They described Redbud Red as “a very approachable medium bodied dry red wine, fragrant and rich, with hints of black cherry and mocha. It compliments cheese, grilled foods, and classic Italian dishes.” I’ve enjoyed a number of very fine meals at Bella Notte, so I would certainly consider their recommendation a badge of merit for Redbud Red.
Cedar Creek hosts many events throughout the year, including Art in the Vineyards, a wide variety of music concerts and this coming Saturday’s Earth Day Celebration. You can keep informed of their special events by signing the guest list on their website. You can also follow them on Facebook.
If you haven’t been to Cedar Creek, located in the eastern part of Pulaski County, it’s well worth a visit. Their tasting hours are Friday and Saturday 1-6 p.m. and by appointment.
