Bob Gibson, aka the Carvin Artist, creates beautiful decoys from the cedar on his Washington County, Kentucky farm. When KSD was tasked to develop a website to showcase Bob’s work a few years ago, one of the first challenges was how to photograph his carvings.
After some consideration, we decided to build a miniature pond in our studio and show the decoys on water. Although created as works of art, Bob assured us they were completely capable of safely floating. In fact, the carved decoy competitions, in which Bob has won numerous ribbons, require the ducks to float before they are judged.

The set up allowed us to use the water as a background. By varying the reflected color and disturbing the surface in differing ways, each decoy is given a unique environment while keeping a group unity.
