Creating Pride with “Kentucky Proud”

In 2002 the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and its consumer advisory panel worked with KSD to develop the original branding and marketing direction for the well-known Kentucky Proud program. The working group envisioned a program that would create expanded opportunities for Kentucky farmers, restaurant owners, and grocers. Today the symbol can be seen nationwide on value-added products and produce made and grown in Kentucky.

The first public versions of the symbol designed by KSD showed the cardinal in brown, as the females typically are. This was an accommodation to alleviate concerns raised about any association with the University of Louisville sports mascot. Later administrations updated the symbol back to red for emphasis.
