KSD Working in Seattle

Kirby Stephens Design has been selected from dozens of design firms across the country to create a new interpretive brochure for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle, Washington. The brochure is to highlight the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Hiram M. Chittenden Locks between Puget Sound and lakes Union and Washington, as well as the accompanying fish ladder and botanical gardens.

Kirby Stephens, Daniel Dutton, and William Cox spent three days on site in June researching and photographing the area for the brochure which is due to print in late 2005.

The locks are a vital part of the waterway system that allows ships to enter the fresh water lakes of Seattle while preventing salt water from damaging vital ecosystems. The accompanying fish ladder is a huge tourist attraction and allows spawning Salmon safe passage through the locks. The site also features a luscious botanical garden open to the public featuring native and exotic plants.

The brochure is intended to give visitors a clear insight into the purpose and history of the locks, fish ladder and garden. The locks are one of the most visited destinations in Seattle.

Although a long way from Kentucky, Kirby Stephens Design was chosen through a competitive process because of past project experience and a clear vision of what the project entailed.
