Is it in the water? Is our water twice as good?

The chance of having twins in the US is a fraction over 3%, or basically 33 to 1. Pretty slim odds. Better than winning the lottery, but not as likely as winning at roulette.

This is one of the myriad of things that makes working at KSD so interesting. Out of six employees, half of them have twins… or in the case of our newest employee, expecting twins. (I’m not sure that “expecting” is the right word, she’s pretty darn sure about it.)

So this got me wondering about the odds of stuff happening. I’ll not vouch for the accuracy of these statistics as, of course, I harvested them from the Internet. But hey, this is a blog, not journalism.

  • Odds of having your identity stolen: 200 to 1
  • Odds of getting hemorrhoids: 25 to 1
  • Odds of getting away with murder: 2 to 1
  • Odds of being on plane with a drunken pilot: 117 to 1
  • Odds of finding out your child is a genius: 250 to 1*
  • Odds of injury from using a chain saw: 4,464 to 1

Fewer than half the KSD staff have chainsaws, so that one may not apply. Anyway, we are all looking forward to meeting the two newest members of the KSD family, and having Julie back at work. We miss you Julie!

*We’re all pretty sure the odds are better at KSD for this one too.

Would you believe that hubby Dwain Harris is 1 in 4,464 to to be injured by a chain saw? True story. I’m taking him to the racetrack! Or, maybe never taking him to the racetrack … hmmm …

Wow! I’ll have to consult the math department to work out the odds of having twins AND being injured by a chainsaw. We need to hear that story when you are back. it’s either awful or awesome.

I stand corrected on how many of the staff at KSD have chain saws. I haven’t asked Tonya, but it seems Kirby, Kim, Bill Jones and Julie all have chain saws. Who knew?

    Kirby, Kim, and soon Julie.

Do you own a chain saw, Tonya?

If you have a group of six couples the chances of one set of twins would be 11 to 1. If in vitro was used the chances are significantly better for having twins. All sorts of simple things might explain it. But I like to think it’s the water and you have your own special well that some crazy moonshinin’ magic man used to use for his still and fertility ceremonies.
